在这几年的翻译生涯中，特别是在翻译报告等涉及大量数据的时候，常常遇到表达数字“上涨、下跌、持平”等情况。其实表示这类意思的词非常多。昨天上午，我在英语共学社群里抛出这个问题，大家随即帮我整理了很多同义词、近义词。严格说来，这篇总结贴不是我一个人的原创，要感谢英语共学社成员Software engineering &, 忏悔的剁手党、小蔡、望酱、ROC、Carol、Charlie北京。

英文写作以及翻译中，同一个语义，经常需要用不同的单词去替换，否则就会显得词汇匮乏，不专业不地道哦。今天来做一份“下降”词汇汇总帖。

1、decrease

vi. become smaller or fewer in size, amount, intensity or degree

减少，减小，减弱，降低

vt. make smaller or fewer in size, amount, intensity or degree

使减小，使减少

n. an instance or example of becoming smaller or fewer

减小或减少

2、fall

vi. decrease in number, amount, intensity or quality

减少，下降

In 1987 imports into Britain fell by 12 per cent.

1987年，英国进口降低了12%。

3、reduce

vt. make smaller or less in amount, degree, or size

减少（数量），降低（程度），缩小（规模）

the need for businesses to reduce costs

公司降低成本的需要

vi. become smaller or less in size, amount, or degree

（规模）缩小，（数量）减少，（程度）降低

the number of priority homeless cases has reduced slightly

被优先照顾的无家可归者人数已微幅下降

4、down to or at a lower price, value or rank

（价格、价值或等级）由高到低

5、drop

v. make or become lower, weaker or less

（使）降低，（使）变弱，（使）减少

pre-tax profits dropped by 37 per cent

税前利润减少了37%

6、slide

n. a decline in value or quality

7、slip

vt. pass or change to a lower, worse, or different condition, typically in a gradual or imperceptible way

（逐渐地或不知不觉地）下降、下跌

many people feel standards have slipped

8、shrink

vi. become or make smaller in size or amount

变小，减小

劳动力减少到不足1000人

9、dip

vi. (of a level or amount) become lower or smaller, typically termporarily

（水平、数量）降低，减少（多指暂时的）

audiences dipped below 600,000 for the match

观看比赛的观众人数减少到了600000以下。

n. an act of sinking or dropping briefly before rising again

（再次上升前的）短暂下沉（或下落）

10、curtail

vt. reduece in extent or quantity; impose a restriction on

（在程度、数量上）减少，缩减；限制

NATO plans to curtail the number of troops being sent to the region.

北大西洋公约组织计划缩减派往该地的部队数量。

11、dwindle

vi. diminish gradually in size, amount, or strength

（在尺寸、数量或力量上）逐渐变小，缩小

traffic has dwindled to a trickle

往来车流量已大量减少

以上都是关于“下降”的单词，除此之外，还有一些词表示“剧烈的”下降。

1、plummet

vi. decrease rapidly in value or amount

（在价值或数量上）骤然下跌，陡然下降

hardware sales plummeted

硬件销售量陡然下跌。

2、dive

vi. (of prices or profits) drop suddenly

（价格、利润）突然下降

3、plunge

v. suffer a rapid decrease in value

利润下降的消息传来，公司的股票便骤然下跌了18便士。

4、slump

vi. undergo a sudden severe or prolonged fall in price, value or amount

5、tumble
